"Hold me in your arms and I want for nothing….but your sweet scent, your soft, supple body and skin and I in disorder, ‘boring’ you with the junky business….writing again and making love all day with your beautiful self — Lay there, back to me, defiant in your defiance. Well f*** you, I love you, and I do and I do and I do."

"No really this is the only interview we’ve done on the whole tour. Apart from some German bird on the phone. But she kept asking about.. she said, “Oh, I love the lyric ‘Dreaded sunny day, I’ll meet you at the cemetery gate’…” I said, “That was the Smiths.”, and then she hung up. So this is the second interview."
Peter Doherty

February 10, 1999,

A quote from what he had written that day in The Books Of Albion,

I want to create a band that people would be sorry to miss, and obliged to adore. The Smiths had a special power. As did the Roses, The Jam and, according to taste, many others. Something very English — imagine having melody, range, emotion, something to say and wear that attracts, interests and informs even instructs those that buy your records and mouth your words.

I want to have a crack(?) before I outgrow this youthful urge to be worshipped, this need to jill a ladder on English pop’s evolutionary chart. I have a band (almost) and the spirit of the Albion enthuses it. A not quite ideal C.D has been cut, and a live performance seems fairly imminent. I want somebody, somewhere to feel it in his best interest to defend himself (at the threat of violence) in his beliefs that ‘The Libertines’ (or whatever we call ourselves) are perfection & beauty personified.

"I was so, so lost and unhappy. If you listen to the songs on the first album, you can hear it. They’re really sad songs and they come from a lonely place. The relationship broke up, and I went into free fall. I saw drugs as a way of avoiding…the darkness."
Peter Doherty

"You can only be so thick-skinned. You can only pretend not to care for so long before you have to admit that you hate being made to look like an idiot. I hate seeing myself misquoted. I hate being linked romantically with girls I’ve been close to for years but never slept with. It’s just upsetting, isn’t it? My nan reads and believes these things. I say, “Hiya Nan, how are you getting on?” and she’ll say, “Are you all right? What about that cat you injected with crack?"

t"Basically there’s a gulf between truth and untruth, I don’t want to be too mathematical about it, because I’m not very good at maths. But it’s a divide between, I dunno, a film and a cartoon. I’ve just become this cartoon character. I try not to follow it, but when you see pictures of yourself that have been photo-shopped to show you doing something you didn’t…. that’s wrong. It’s my worst nightmare – and being misquoted, too, especially as I’m so precious about words."

Carl:On the day I split up with Dirty Pretty Things I was on Brighton Pier. We had a gig down there. These two girls came up, they had 'Libertine' tattooed on their ankles, in the same writing that we've got..
John:(Interrupting) I think it's incredible, it seems like, Carl meeting Libertines fans, they just, um.. I just love them (Pete and Carl erupt into laughter).
Pete:They're a funny old bunch.
Carl:Anyway, these two girls asked if they could show me their tattoos, so I said, 'Don't mind if I do'..
John:(Interrupting again) I think that's, that's..
Carl:John! (Pete splutters with laughter)!
John:They're sincerely a nice bunch, I don't think you should..
Pete:No, no, no, we're not laughing at them! We're laughing at you interrupting him. John, what's the matter with you? No, I'm worried about John.
Carl:Ok, so there's these girls, and they're showing me these tattoos on their ankles..
John:(Interrupting again) It's sincerity, it's..
Carl:John! (Pete erupts into more laughter and makes peace hand sign at John). I said, 'Alright, great, are you coming to the gig tonight?' And they said, 'What gig?' They were like, 'Nah, we've grown up a bit.'
Pete:Oh dear.

"Arcadia? The realm of the infinite? It’s a poet’s corner… It’s not a cult or a religion – it’s an awareness of your surroundings; you’re not going to force yourself on anyone and, equally, no one’s going to force themselves on you. And it’s about community and pleasure. It came from a whisper through the trees. It came from a crack in the pavement. It can also come when you open a bag of crisps, or when you kick a football against a goalpost. Even if I was winding you up, it would still be true, because Arcadia and the Arcadian Dream is so deep, is so true to our hearts… It can be as powerful as your imagination can allow it to be. But, it can also be as dark and twisted as your soul… Arcadia encompasses the infinite, and that’s why it comforts me."

  • Interviewer: What did you miss most about Pete?
  • (Peter hides under his hat.)
  • Carl: I don't know. If I'm honest, then I missed having a... having a best friend who, for all his foibles, who got me. Because we just share the same dreams, and the same sense of humour, the same irony--
  • John: The same pants.
  • Carl: Very good, John. It's just--you know when you meet someone who gets you and you get them. On the deepest level. I mean that. And...that's something I always missed about Pete.
  • Interviewer: Pete, what did you miss about Carl?
  • Carl: Go on, say something funny. Go on.
  • Pete: I just missed Carl, to be honest.

a sin you swallow for the rest of your life

horse of bone
